Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) Reviews Movie Reviews By Reviewer Type All Critics Top Critics All Audience Verified Audience Page 2 of 5 February 12, 2020 Though it hides its sneer behind a half-arsed feminist agenda, Birds Of Prey is messy, lazy and needlessly unpleasant. Call it upcycled, repurposed or just plain ripped-off, but it"s made out of familiar and gaudy stuff. Hyper-violent cartoon fluff, with nary a moral in sight, unless you count keeping a hyena in a tiny New York apartment as an act of kindness. Maybe it was a rescue hyena? Whatever. Prepubescent girls sneaking a peek at pajama parties will be damaged. I gotta say, though, that for as long as they"ve been waiting, women deserve better than middling, pandering stuff like Captain Marvel and now Birds Of Prey. A movie that never really flies and relies 100% on Harley Quinn"s antics instead of character development or plot. [Full Review in Spanish] February 11, 2020 Birds of Prey... is a fast-paced action movie with fantastic stunts and set pieces. We"re just not given any good reason to care about Harley Quinn, or her female compatriots needed to be emotionally invested in their ultimate victory or demise. February 10, 2020 Yan and Robbie and these Birds are able to fly free of the restraints that had been put on them in the past. You might just wish they stop flapping wildly all over the place, crashing into every corner of every wall, ultimately going nowhere in particular In the end, while Birds of Prey is a step in the right direction for DC in terms of tone and character, it"s still a little too jumbled and hectic to truly be a home run. But while this definitely has its moments, it"s a film that never quite bursts into life, held back by some nasty underlying violence, a story that is simply too complicated and a supporting team that don"t quite grasp the opportunity they"ve been handed. The momentum steadily fades, though, and that"s bad news for a film as shallow as this one. It offers a hundred different versions of Robbie gurning to camera - usually after bashing someone"s head in with a baseball bat - and not a single moment to elevate the proceedings above a scrappy, screechy, second-rate cartoon hotchpotch. It"s passable entertainment on the superhero level, but another opportunity missed to revel in the zany gleeful madness of Harley. "Birds of Prey" wants to fly high, powered by its own wild child, rule-breaking spirit. The truth is it never gets off the ground. February 9, 2020 Content to be nihilistic and mean-spirited as an end in itself... it gives the audience not one character it can engage with emotionally or psychologically, leaving them adrift in a world of sensory overload and fetishized violence. In short, it"s trash. I do wish it did more with the story and explored the characters further, but most of us are here for the Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn show. However, the fight scenes grow tiresome, so does the unnecessary body pile-up. All delivered via ear-debilitating sound mixing. "Birds of Prey" may be R-rated, but the extra gore feels unnecessary here. For its ticket price, failed antagonist, and ultimately forgettable emotional arcs, I"d save this one for a plane. February 8, 2020 Of the many things I hate about this origin story, perhaps the thing I hate the most is the way it uses mental illness as a cheap plot device to make Harley"s underlying character entirely malleable. The toxic male gaze of Suicide Squad is thankfully absent, but the sloppy writing and shoddy filmmaking remain intact. Harley feels restricted in her own film, an incoherent narrative without any real focus other than a feeble effort to laugh at its own jokes. Page 2 of 5.
